House v. NCAA and what it could mean for beach volleyball

If you haven’t heard about it, or only heard bits and pieces, here’s a quick summary of college scholarships and what might change in 2025/2026. The House v. NCAA lawsuit is a monumental legal case involving the NCAA and the rules regarding athlete compensation.

The plaintiffs in the case argued that the NCAA’s restrictions on athlete compensation constitute an illegal restraint of trade under antitrust law. They contended that these rules limit the earning potential of college athletes and are not justified by the need to maintain amateurism in college sports. Overall, it currently looks like this will benefit schools and athletes, but how much of those dollars will make it down to other sports is yet to be seen. Scholarship limits are being eliminated as part of the settlement, replaced by a roster limit system in which each team can choose to scholarship as many or as few athletes as it wants.

According to Yahoo News, “As part of the House settlement agreement made public on Friday, college leaders are expanding scholarships to full rosters of each sport, eliminating scholarship restrictions and replacing them with roster size limits. The new scholarship and roster structure — an attempt to prevent future lawsuits — takes effect starting in the 2025-26 academic year and coincides with the settlement’s new model that permits schools to share revenue directly with athletes.”

Then of course, there’s federal Title IX law. Scholarship increases for a men’s sport will likely need to be implemented in a women’s sport too, driving up the additional costs. Colleges will need time to plan and organized, and as mentioned in The Athletic on nytimes.com, not all schools have even agreed on how to implement this. “The Big 12 is the first of the suit’s defendants to vote on the settlement terms, with the remaining power conferences and NCAA Board of Governors also expected to do so this week.”

Beach volleyball could see new opportunities to earn money through NIL deals, endorsements, and other forms of compensation. This is very new territory, but it’s clear there’s a future here as schools deal with and implement these changes.

The House v. NCAA lawsuit is a pivotal moment for college athletics, and may reshape the landscape of athlete compensation. For beach volleyball, the outcomes could mean increased earning opportunities for players and changes in how programs are managed and funded. The ruling will likely set a precedent that affects all college sports, emphasizing the need for fair and equitable treatment of athletes across different disciplines, and will definitely take some years for the dust to settle and new opportunities to reach every school.

Truly Epic GNBV in Feb 2024

On February 3rd and 4th, 2024, players from sixteen states and provinces, representing fifty-eight different volleyball clubs, all played in the GNBV National Showcase. Through the cold, and late Sunday the wind and rain, players and college coaches persevered to the end of finals together. At one point, the GNBV team was standing on our tents to keep them from flying away, all while top players from across North America were closing out their playoff brackets.

Players are the core of GNBV. They spend hours practicing, studying, and playing. With family support, they build their collegiate careers and spend many years preparing for and finally moving on to play in college. Here at GNBV we are so fortunate to provide a place where players can showcase their skills in front of coaches from around the country.

Every event we sell out. Every time we also remind everyone to register early. GNBV events are designed so that players and coaches can connect, and coaches won’t have time to see 50 or 60 courts of teams. GNBV events are right sized so that coaches can see everyone they want to see. With live scoring in Volleyballlife, they can see when everyone is playing, and how close the next game is. Combined with GNBV’s event design, our showcases are the best in the country.

This is why 22 college coaches attended the February showcase and spent their day out watching players, and why GNBV’s June and October 2024 events already have a sold line up of college coaches for our showcase and BNVE college coaches clinic that also always end up selling out.  It’s no secret that with 788 athletes who Got Noticed at our events people return year during high school and even after they are committed to play at our events.

GNBV’s 10th Anniversary

We’ve made it to our 10th anniversary!

GNBV celebrates our 10th anniversary of helping athletes “Get Noticed” and recruited to play beach volleyball at Division I NCAA schools. My name is Daron Forbes & I started the journey to get my own daughter recruited. As an indoor club owner my goal was to get my daughter recruited and return back to indoor. After that first tournament the college coaches asked for more and here we are ten years later. I closed my indoor club Team WAVE aka We Are Volleyball Elite and went all in on beach. So far that we know of, we have helped 777 athletes achieve their dreams of playing beach volleyball in college. You can see all these athletes & where they got recruited to by visiting our committed only page at @gnbv.commits on instagram.

To read more about my story and how I started with indoor and finally made it to the beach, visit this link on bvne.org.

We can’t wait for the next Get Noticed Beach Volleyball aka GNBV National College Recruiting Showcase Feb 4th in Santa Monica. This one will be international with teams traveling from Ecuador to participate. Over the years we have had athletes travel from Singapore, Denmark, England, Mexico, Ecuador, Columbia, Canada, & Puerto Rico.

Because teams are traveling from around the world to play we made it a two day series of events with lots of options to choose from so athletes can make the most of their trip. Here’s what a showcase weekend in Santa Monica, CA looks like:

Saturday
BVNE Sunrise College Coaches Clinic 7am-9am

Kauai Bikini tournament
9:30am-2:30am
Every paid entry gets a two piece KB top & bottom of their choice.

BVNE Sunset College Coaches Clinic
3:00pm-5pm

Clinics are open to any and all entrants. The is this an awesome opportunity for the athletes to train with up to 6 or 7 college coaches, learn new drills & prepare for the showcase. It’s also a great place to network with other athletes for potential new partners and make life long connections with new friends.

Athletes can customize their weekend with any combo of events that first their schedule.

Sunday is the grand finale, our GNBV National College Recruiting Showcase. On average we have 15 college coaches who travel from across the United States to watch athletes play. USC, UCLA, Pepperdine, Long Beach, LMU, Vanguard, Concorida, Cal Poly, Tulane, South Carolina, Stanford & Cal Berkeley just to name a few, are the schools that are staples at our events.

Over the years we have figured out what works for the athletes, college coaches and our system is set and ready for another amazing ten years. As we celebrate our success with the players, families & college coaches we strive to keep getting better. It’s easy when you do what you love and love what you do.

Thank you to all who have help GNBV become the largest national college recruiting showcase and we look forward to see everyone on the sands of Santa Monica, CA.

In case you missed the GNBV National Recruiting Showcase and the Kauai Bikini Tournament in Santa Monica, here’s how it went!

GNBV Returns to Santa Monica

GNBV National College Recruiting Showcase back in Santa Monica Beach, California!

After hosting virtual and in person showcases from Florida to California, were super excited to be back on our home beach after traveling for the last 12 months. On October 10th GNBV returned to person with over 22 college coaches spent the day to recruit athletes from across the United States and Canada.  Teams played in a tournament format, playing 2 games to 21 in pool play, so college coaches had ample time to watch them play in person for recruiting purposes.

The day before the showcase, BVNE hosted two college coaches clinics so athletes have the chance to train with up to eight different college coaches, learn new skills and improve their overall game.

With 64 teams signed up and in person college coaches on site it was a great day on the beach. We recorded the 16’s and 18’s gold division final matches for the GNBV YouTube channel.  Video from our last virtual showcase in Canada as well as the October 10th event was provided to coaches on site.

Everyone can view our full length video by visiting youtube.gnbv.net or just visit YouTube and search for “Get Noticed Beach Volleyball”.  GNBV is not a recruiting service. We host events and bring everyone together in one place so athletes can Get Noticed and college coaches can watch the athletes who are interested in playing in college, in person.  It’s that simple and we are excited to be back in action at 1200 PCH, Santa Monica.  Theres nothing better than being outside on our home courts in the fresh air hosting our GNBV National College Recruiting Showcase.

To get a glimpse of how many athletes have been noticed at our events visit our committed page on instagram at @gnbv.commits. As of October 2021, 559 athletes that we know of have played in our events, been watched by on site colleges and later committed to play colligate beach volleyball for one of the colleges who was present at the event.  Our showcase has three divisions for 14U, 16U and 18U, with the 16U being the most popular college coaches start watching athletes at a young age so playing in our 14U division can prove to be very helpful for when an athlete reaches the recruitable age.

Capacity is still limited so don’t wait to sign up. We hope to see you there!

GNBV 2021 Virtual Showcases and the NCAA dead period

Since our first event in 2014, we’ve grown and adapted along the way. 2020 was no different. Here we are in 2021, about to adapt again, with more news about the NCAA dead period.

GNBV was the first Virtual Showcase, created in July 2020. With much success coming out of Canada with over half the athletes committing and more with offers coming, resulting from just one event. The virtual showcase proved to be what was need durning NCAA’s dead period.

The NCAA has extended the dead period for all sports once again.  As of February 2021, the new end date is now set to be May 31st and this means in person recruiting will have been banned for well over a year before this is over.

Recruiting hasn’t stopped. At GNBV we adapted to the new normal instead of waiting for the old normal to return. In 2020 we were the first to create Virtual College Recruiting Showcases and keep recruiting going. Check our @bvne.commits page to see how it has been going, and remember the only way to be featured is to let us know you committed. We’re not you’re recruiter and won’t know unless you tell us.

Play GNBV Virtual Showcases where we handle the video from event day, load it into the GNBV YouTube Channel, load it to the event results, and provide players copies of their video, all included in the ticket price. When we list your video on our public YouTube channel at “Get Noticed Beach Volleyball” it’s for all to see. College coaches, friends and family can now view your video whenever they would like.

The GNBV YouTube Channel is the edge to getting noticed. College coaches are using our unedited event video to see if a player coachable, to see how you handle pressure situations, are you a supportive partner, are you in good physical shape and ready for the college game.  These are just a few of the things college coaches are looking at which are in full length GNBV video.

The dead period will end May 31st. Come play at our very first IN Person College Recruiting Showcase June 5th and 6th.

GNBV is not a recruiter or scout. We host clinics and college recruiting showcases in person and virtual. All athletes are welcome to bring a coach or recruiter with them to our showcase or clinics.

Local events are happening across North America. Find an event near you.

GNBV June 7th – National College Recruiting Showcase

Come play in the GNBV National College Recruiting Showcase on June 7th 2020! Players from coast to coast will be in Santa Monica this June to play in front of college coaches. We’re also hosting two college coaches clinics and a Kauai Bikini National Tournament on June 6th. Our schedule will let athletes play in any or all events.

We will not list a school unless they provide confirmation first.

How to make the most of your trip? Besides skill, sportsmanship, make sure coaches know where you are playing. You need to email them so that you can own the relationship between you and the coach. GNBV works with the college coaching community by publishing everything in our event online. We can’t list you until you have signed up for our event.
